MODA - Sampler Block Shuffle - Week 8

Hopefully everyone has had a joyous Christmas.  Ours was very low key.  My Mom is having some health issues so we stayed close to home.  I love the Hallmark Channel.  I got to watch it all day and sew.  Loved it!!  Here are three more blocks.  Enjoy them and the New Year.  Be safe!

Moda - Sampler Block Shuffle - Week 7

Boy, I tell ya.  You guys know how to count.  Where is Block 16?  Where is Block 16?  I was so excited about the Crow Block, I did it first.  Then did one of the two other pieced blocks and it was not 16.  So guess what, you will get it this week with two other block and we will get back in line regarding the numbering order.  These three blocks are a little more challenging.  More pieces and SMALLER pieces.  I'm still working with my same group of fabrics.  Getting smaller and smaller pieces left over.  I'll probably need to add a couple more pieces of background.  You can never have enough backgrounds.  For every color of fabric purchased you should buy a background.  You can never have enough.

Are you still working on all those flying geese units for the border???

Batting and 12 Days of Christmas

Today, Something To Crow About, has batting by the yard on sale.  It's Day 9 of the 12 Days of Christmas. Have you come into the shop and picked up your coupon sheet for the 12 Days of Christmas?  You need a coupon to take advantage of ALL the December Discounts.  There is a great one for the Coupon Sale on December 28th through 30th.

"BATTING", everyone needs batting to get even the smallest of table runners or wall hangings completed.  I do save my smaller pieces to use in smaller projects.  But when I need a piece for a larger wall hanging or quilt, I never seem to have the right size.  I like what Hobbs 80/20 provides me for my quilts.  I like the way it looks after a quilt or wall hanging has been washed.  Hobbs 80/20 is my "go to" batting every time.

Have you got your shopping done?  Have you trimmed your house?  What about your tree?  Have you planned your Holiday meal or meals?  Do you have family and/or friends arriving for the Holidays?

Me,  No, No, No, Mom does that one, No we are traveling to Roseburg.

I think I will try to get some shopping done tomorrow.  Stay tuned, Kennette

MODA - Sampler Block Shuffle - Week 6

So far this is my favorite block.  You know which one.  The one with the crow.  And of course, crow and stars.  OMG!!  I love this little block.  It was so easy to applique.  I know, I know.  The star points are not fun but mine are funky stars.  I just love them.  If crows are not your thing, make your bird blue for those pesky Blue Jays.  Or what about Red, for those Holiday Cardinals.  Remember my famous saying, "Quilter's Choice".  That also means, if you don't want to do the applique, that's o.k.  Choose your favorite block to add to your growing stack.  Only two blocks this week so you will have time to do the applique.  Keep tuning in for more blocks.

Chicken Coop

I've mentioned my "no" Chicken Coop.  I just love the rustic look and the old barn wood exterior.  It makes me smile every time I look at it and think about all the chickens that have lived in in.  We haven't touched it but painting the trim occasionally.  I think I'll leave it that way.  I'm not the kinda person that wants to clean up an old Chicken Coop.  Maybe I can get Jim to do than job???  Don't think so.  But it is still cute!!

MODA Sample Block Shuffle - Week 5

Week 5 - More blocks to add you your already growing stack.  Nice simple blocks.  Easy piecing.  I also did some of my flying geese units for my border.  A few every week and the task will not be so daunting.

Another nice calm before the rush of Christmas.  Do you have your Christmas Tree yet?  I'm sure that my Mom will want a "Charlie Brown" tree again this year.  I'll send Jim out in the yard to dig up a seedling.  He's excited about that.   Have I started my Christmas shopping yet?  No.  But I've talked about it.  Does that count?  The holidays are always a rush to get everything done but it never gets all done.  Some things fall by the wayside.  I wonder what it will be this year?

Don't forget to come into the Shop and pick up your entry into the Coloring Contest.  Help us decorate our "Flat Tree" and join the latest craze.   I'm putting up the Shop tree today and we need ornaments for our tree.  The more ornaments, the better our tree will look.   Vote on your favorite ornament during Christmas week and the winner will get a stack of fat quarters.

Lots of things to do this week so lets get busy.

MODA Sampler Block Shuffle - Week 4

Turkey Day is over and some of us have an extra day off.  Me, I have an extra day to sew.  My blocks are coming along and I am going to concentrate on getting some of my flying geese units done.  At least eight units per week and I think I will have enough by the middle of January.  I have you all to keep me honest and I will try to get them done.  I promise.  Sometimes I have to be accountable to someone.   I can't wait for more blocks.  Enjoy!!

MODA Sampler Block Shuffle - Week 3

It's Week 3 and I'm getting a nice little stack of blocks.  Three weeks, nine blocks.  I'm enjoying the 6" finished size.  Are you?  I have one of the staff doing them in a 9" finished size.  They are looking good also.  My ol' saying "Quilter's Choice".  I would love to see some in a 3" finished size.  A challenge for someone maybe?  Leave me a comment on the size that you are doing and the staff will pick a random winner for a stack of fat quarters.  Posts need to be done before next Friday.  Links for Blocks 7 through 9 are below.

Remember the "no-waste flying geese method" that I talked about last week?  It's time to start on your borders.  One of the borders will be flying geese, SURPRISE!!  Below is the link for your flying geese border units.  You will need 44 each of these four geese units.  If you work on them as you go, you will be ready in January to put your quilt together.

I'm going to do mine all scrappy with the same background.  Sometimes "scrappy" isn't for everyone.  Or you don't have enough different backgrounds.  (I know a Quilt Shop were you might find some.)  To make it simple, choose one fabric in a scrappy quilt and make it the same.  Example:  In a scrappy star quilt, make all the star centers the same fabric.  In a log cabin quilt, make the light side all the same fabric.  Sometimes doing this will tie the whole quilt together.  It will still look scrappy but the decision is easier.

        Remember "Quilter's Choice".

This is another great scrappy quilt by Linda Peck. Two great quilts in my favorite.

MODA Sampler Block Shuffle - Week 2

Do you have Blocks 1-3 done yet?  What colors did you choose?  Are they going to be my favorite, Scrappy, or a controlled group?  I'm enjoying mine.  As you know I love to work small with lots of fabric.  If you can use 10 fabrics, 100 is better.  Block 4 thru 6 are just as cute as the first three.

Do you have problems with the flying geese unit?  There are many different ways in making flying geese units.  We like to use the "No-Waste Flying Geese Method".  Stop by and ask for a handout on how to do them.  It goes fast with no-waste.  Next week I'll be giving you your weekly blocks AND the Inner Border units.  Hummm!  Could it be flying geese units?

I'm tending to use my light fabrics for backgrounds.  This would look awesome with dark backgrounds.  Maybe a black or navy?  Step outside your box and do something different.

Sampler Block Shuffle - Week 1

What a great idea!!  And I'm going to start blogging also.  Life couldn't be any better.  Now lets get started.  The Sampler Block Shuffle is sponsored by Moda and it is going to be fabulous!!  Beginning today and ending in January, I will provide two to three blocks each week on Fridays.  You will be able to download the blocks from this blog or come into the shop to receive the patterns.  They will only be available for two weeks.  Thye are 6" finished blocks with the patterns in grayscale to allow for greater variety in fabric choice and color palette.  I've done mine in the new group by Primitive Gatherings called Miniature Gatherings.  I love doing small blocks.

Tips and Tricks:

Block 1 - Different ways of doing Half Square Triangles

Block 2 - Accurate Cutting and Accurate Sewing
